Jackie Kennedy’s New York Apartment

Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis was, unquestionably, a style icon whose image has endured long after her death. Not only was Jackie’s taste in fashion a huge draw for many, but her tastes in culture and design also embedded her into the zeitgeist of 20th-century upper-class America. Though an immensely private person during her life, much of her tastes and interiors have been revealed since her death, including Jackie Kennedy’s New York Apartment – here is a look around the stylish abode:

Located at 1040 Fifth Avenue, Jacqueline bought the penthouse apartment on the fiftieth floor in 1964, a year after her husband’s assassination. She lived in the luxury property with her children Caroline and John. The co-op is a limestone cladded seventeen-storey building in the Carnegie hill area of Manhattan, immediately opposite Central Park.

The 1930s complex includes only twenty-seven apartments, allowing for grander-scaled homes. According to City Realty each apartment has spacious entrance galleries leading to 20-30ft living rooms. Apartments include libraries, dining rooms, kitchens and pantries, maid’s quarters and servants’ halls. There is a full-time doorman, original fireplaces, and terraces/balconies. Jackie’s apartment included five bedrooms all with their own ensuites, as well as Central Park views the looked out onto the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir.

1040 is such a coveted address that it has long been one of the most expensive blocks in the city with space costing, on average, $5,591 per square foot. Though the apartment occupied by the Kennedys hasn’t been listed for over a decade, it is the most expensive unit in the building, closing in 2003 for $30 million. The apartment became Jackie’s final abode, staying in the property for thirty years until her death in 1994. After her death Jackie’s estate was auctioned off through Sotheby’s, giving the public a chance to see the interiors of the luxury accommodation for the first time.
